On Sunday one of my sermon illustrations was from an encounter in my Dallas TX neighborhood. I went door to door that summer seeking to plant a church in the Dallas Fortworth area. The church plant failed and my supervisor decided to send me home to share in my neighborhood. I met one lady leaving her house. She explained that her husband had been injured and she had to work for the family. In her rush to work she graciously told me that she could give me 4 minutes. I shared the good news in two minutes and left time for her response. She rejected any gospel that was “cheap” and “free”. Something that great must be earned.
Now I had one minute left. “When you get your paycheck do you buy food for the family?” She rolled her eyes and said, “Of course.” Next I asked, “Do you give any of the food to your husband?” Again, “Of course?” I acted shocked. “He gets food. He didn’t do anything to earn it.” Silence. She got the point. The gospel is free because someone paid the price for it and then could give it by grace to everyone who believed. She was acting out the gospel of grace by her work of love for her family. When you can do nothing yourself, you must follow what Moses said at the Red Sea, “Stand still and see the salvation of God.”
