Mitchell's Hospital Escape Plan

In this episode, Dr. G shares a tender, bittersweet story from the final months of his mentor, Dr. John Mitchell. Watching the slow decline of a man so strong — physically, intellectually, spiritually — took a deep emotional toll. But one hospital visit, in particular, revealed just how much trust, humor, and humanity still remained between mentor and student. During what was supposed to be a routine visit, Dr. G slowly realized something unexpected was happening. Dr. Mitchell began asking him to gather personal items, unplug things, and prepare belongings — step by step, quietly and deliberately. It suddenly became clear: this wasn’t small talk. This was an escape plan. And Dr. G had unintentionally become the accomplice. The moment brought both humor and weight. Dr. G had never said “no” to Dr. Mitchell. He had driven him to appointments, served as his ears, his helper, his advocate — always saying yes. But this time was different. Saying yes would mean crossing a line that neither Mary Mitchell nor the doctors had approved. In a moment of quick thinking — and deep respect — Dr. G invoked the one authority Dr. Mitchell would always honor. “Uncle John,” he said, “I talked to Mary. She made it very clear you’re not coming home until Tuesday.” Instantly, the plan dissolved. Dr. Mitchell simply replied, “Okay. That’s the plan.” This story captures the dignity, humor, and mutual trust that marked their relationship to the very end.
