Q&A Moving the Library to Africa - Giving Books a Second Life
In this episode, Dr. G addresses a question many people have asked: is ABC in Africa taking the entire Multnomah library collection? His answer reveals both the scope of the vision and the heart behind it. ABC’s Bible teaching ministry is deeply interested in the full breadth of the collection — not only theology and Bible resources, but also the liberal arts materials that support Christian education as a whole. From the beginning, the goal in Rwanda has been bigger than a single school. The vision is a Central Theological Library that serves Bible colleges, churches, pastors, and Christian liberal arts institutions across the region. Just as Multnomah expanded its majors over time and built a library to support them, the same kind of growth is expected in Africa. Those books will be just as valuable there as they have been here. One distinctive part of the plan is the decision to accept duplicates. Rather than limiting the collection to a single copy of each title, ABC sees duplicates as an opportunity. The first copy strengthens the core library, which is aiming for 100,000 volumes and is already nearing that goal. Additional copies become a gift — distributed to churches starting libraries, Christian schools, and institutions where books are scarce and treasured. Recipients contribute only a small shipping cost, ensuring the books go to people who truly need and will use them. Dr. G shares that this passion for giving books a second life has guided his work for years. Whether it’s a major university collection or an individual scholar’s lifetime of books, the conviction is the same: good books should keep serving the church. For that reason, ABC is genuinely interested in the entire Multnomah collection — confident that every part of it can continue shaping students, pastors, and leaders across Africa.
